How do you get rid of nasal polyps?

Respiratory system is a system that helps the body to gain oxygen and eliminate waste gases such as carbon dioxide. This system ensures all cells in the body gain oxygen which plays an important role in cell metabolism and its vitality. Respiratory system is always associated with the breathing organs such as lungs and its airways. The air that enters the nostril will be filtered from entering the body. Hence, when the inside of the nose swells, such as from nasal polyp, it may lead to breathing problems and interfere with the smell sensation. To help treat such symptoms, medicine such as Nasonex 50 mg is used to help a person breathe better.

Nasal polyp can cause great disturbance in the way a person breathes. What exactly is a nasal polyp? Nasal polyp is defined as benign inflammatory and hyperplastic outgrowths of the sinonasal mucosa. In simple words, it is a painless soft growth inside the nose which resembles a fleshy swelling. Polyp can grow in one or both sides of the nostril. It can grow as a single flesh or in clusters. Polyp can be seen as pink or even yellowish-brown colour flesh. Individuals that are likely to develop nasal polyp are those with asthma, allergies and frequent sinus infections. Nasal polyp usually does not cause any symptoms unless it is too large or starting to cause sleep or breathing problems. Common symptoms include runny nose, feeling mucus running down the back of the throat (postnasal drip), reduced sense of smell and taste, snoring and sometimes nosebleeds.

Since nasal polyp can be a great nuisance to some people, finding ways to get rid of it will mean a lot. The easiest and best treatment currently available is a nose drop or nose spray containing steroids. Steroids work by reducing the inflammation. This is usually the common prescription and the first medication given to treat polyp, especially in small polyps. In case of larger polyps or severe inflammation, steroid tablets are usually considered. Steroid tablets are usually taken for up to 2 weeks and may be given aside from nose drops and sprays to be used at the same time. The downside of the steroid tablet is the higher risk for side effects such as weight gain. Surgery is the last resolution to get rid of nasal polyp. Common procedure known as polypectomy is usually considered as a patient with no sign of improvement after 10 weeks of treatment with steroid tablets, spray or drop. In this procedure, the polyp is eliminated using micro surgical instruments and in some cases, small pieces of bones in the nose may need to be removed to expand the nasal airway.

Getting rid of nasal polyp is no easy matter. This is because the probability of the nasal polyp to grow back within years after surgery is still present. Hence, it is common to still be using nasal spray or drop to help prevent re-growth of the nasal polyp. Aside from getting rid of nasal polyp from a medical perspective, there is actually another way available to help eliminate nasal polyp or at the very least, to lessen the symptom of nasal polyp. This includes natural remedies such as using tea tree oil and taking a steam bath, using a humidifier to improve symptoms, learn to identify and avoid the trigger if it is caused by allergy reaction, learn to manage asthma and to avoid nasal irritants that could lead to more inflammation of the nasal passages.

In essence, getting rid of nasal polyp is easiest by taking medication. It is important to use medication the right way by following doctor’s instructions. When medication fails to control symptoms from nasal polyps, surgery is recommended. Using other ways besides from a medical perspective such as home remedies to help treat nasal polyp is not wrong but it is best to talk with healthcare providers and have discussion before doing so.

One of the common medications used for nasal polyp is Nasonex. Nasonex contains mometasone as its corticosteroid. Corticosteroid prevents release of substance in the body from triggering inflammation response. Nasonex is usually used once or twice a day depending on severity of the symptoms. It is important to only deliver the spray as prescribed by doctors. Avoid spraying directly onto the middle wall of the nose. Avoid eye or mouth contact with the spray. Avoid using Nasonex on an injured nose or damages inside the nose. Remember to shake the container well before using. Nasonex is best used on a daily basis and regular use helps patients to get the most benefits. It is best to use it at the same time of the day. Nasonex should provide improvement of symptoms within the first two days of using it but it may take up to 2 weeks before the medicine reaches its full potential. Nasonex should not be used for more than a month unless directed by a doctor and under medical supervision. Common side effects of this medicine are nose or throat dryness, nosebleed and blood-stained phlegm. If side effects persist or make a person feel really sick, they should talk to their healthcare provider immediately.
